Square Aluminum Tubing

Square aluminum tubing is an extruded aluminum used for various fabrication projects where corrosion resistance and weight restrictions are significant considerations. Applications may include support columns, gates, fencing, handrails, trailers, bikes, home construction, etc.

A square aluminum tube has square corners inside and outside with no weld seam. ADI Metal is a leading manufacturer of square and rectangular tubes. Some aluminum square tubes available at ADI Metal include 6061, 5083, 5086, 6063, 6005, and stainless steel aluminum square tubes.

Square Aluminum Tubing Basics

Aluminum has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, making it preferable to steel in applications that prioritize low weights without sacrificing strength. Some of the alloys available include 6061, 6063, 5083, and 5086.

Aluminum Square Tube 6061

This is the most versatile of the heat-treatable aluminum alloys. It is easily fabricated and offers various mechanical features and corrosion resistance. Alloy 6061 can be welded using all methods, including furnace brazing.

Some of its properties include:

  • Good corrosion and wear resistance
  • Good machining/grinding
  • Poor bending/forming
  • Excellent welding

Aluminum Square Tube 6063

This grade is often called an architectural alloy. Alloy 6063 was created as an extrusion alloy with moderately high tensile features, high corrosion resistance, and superb finish properties. It is best suited for anodizing applications.

Some of its features include:

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Poor wear resistance
  • Good forming/bending and machining/grinding
  • Excellent welding

Aluminum Square Tube 5083

Magnesium is the primary alloying agent in this series. These alloys possess moderate strength, good corrosion resistance in aquatic environments, and good weldability. Due to these characteristics, these alloys are primarily used in marine applications.

Aluminum Square Tube 5086

Magnesium is also the primary alloying agent in this series. Like the 5083 series, alloys in this series have average strength, good corrosion resistance in aquatic surroundings, and good weldability. These alloys are mainly used in marine applications.

Square Aluminum Tubing Grades at ADI Metal

Some of the square aluminum tubing grades at ADI Metal include:

6061 Aluminum Square Tubes

6061 and 6063 are very popular choices for extrusion. Alloy 6061 is often used for structural applications like screw machine parts, cover plates, trench covers, truck runways, running boards, steps, and walkways.

6063 Aluminum Square Tubes

Alloy 6063 is the most popular choice for extrusion. It is mainly used for structural applications such as railing, window frames, roofs, shop fittings, marine piping, recreational equipment, lawn furniture, luggage racks, irrigation piping, and storage tanks.

5083 Aluminum Square Tubes

Examples of some typical applications of 5083 alloys include 5182 in a beverage can lid, 5052 in electronics, and 5083 in marine applications.

5086 Aluminum Square Tubes

Because of its excellent corrosion resistance, Alloy 5086 is ideal for marine applications.
